Adicţia sexuală se referă la un fenomen în care persoanele sunt incapabile să îşi stăpânească un anumit comportament sexual. Ea a mai fost numită şi “hipersexualitate“, “dependenţă sexuală“, şi “patimă sexuală“. Existenţa condiţiei nu este universal acceptată de sexologi iar etiologia sa, natura şi validitatea sunt subiecte de controversă.
Susţinătorii conceptului au oferit variate descrieri, fiecare conform propriului model favorit de fenomen prezumtiv. Adepţii unu model de adicţie a fenomenului se referă la el ca “adicţie sexuală” şi oferă definiţii bazate pe adicţii de substanţă; adepţii modelelor de pierdere a controlului se referă la el ca “patimă sexuală” şi oferă definiţii bazate pe dezordinea compulsiv-obsesivă. Scepticii cred că este un mit faptul că fenomenul este o boală sau dezordine, considerându-l mai degrabă un produs cultural şi supus altor influenţe.
Unii din adepţii adicţiei sexuale consideră că acest concept întâmpină multe dificultăţi în perceperea sa corectă de către publicul general. Unul din aceste obstacole ar fi maniera în care este percepută adicţia sexuală îm media populară. Surse media zilnice transformă în senzaţional şi denigrează persoanele care au raportat ca fiind sex-adictivi. Această viziune este extinsă în spectacolele ficţionale de televiziune şi în filme.
